The 2025 Waterfowl Festival generated an estimated $5.49 million to $6.19 million in Talbot County economic activity, according to an Institute for Service Research study. This estimate measures how festival-related spending circulates through the local economy, supporting businesses, employees, and suppliers.
Shopping contributed about $1.95 million to the county model, followed by $1.66 million in food and beverage spending. Lodging expenditures within Talbot County approached $1 million.
An estimated 32,400 people attended the November festival. More than 62% came from outside Talbot County, and nearly 64% of nonresident guests stayed overnight. Nonresident guests spent an average of $446.29 on their trips.
“The festival may last a few days, but its economic reach extends throughout the county,” said Deena Kilmon, executive director of Waterfowl Festival Inc. “Our guests stay in local accommodations, discover restaurants and shops, meet artists and makers, and experience communities they want to visit again.”
The findings show how galleries, restaurants, inns, retailers, and other businesses can benefit even without participating in the festival. Extended hours, joint promotions, and invitations to return can help turn event traffic into lasting customer relationships.
“The Waterfowl Festival gives us a measurable example of how signature events support Talbot County’s economy,” said Stephanie Mervine, director of Talbot County Economic Development and Tourism.
